Elegant pair of vintage carved alabaster and marble female bust bookends in an Art Deco / Classical Revival style. Each bookend features a softly carved female bust in warm cream-toned alabaster mounted on a gray-veined marble base. The pair displays beautifully together and has a refined antique look suited for a library, bookshelf, desk, mantel, or curated vintage display.
Each bookend measures approximately 5 inches tall x 4 inches long x 2.5 inches deep.
The undersides are hand-marked with numbers, likely workshop, model, or pairing numbers. The pieces are unsigned and maker is unknown. Based on style, material, and construction, these appear to be early-to-mid 20th century, possibly Italian or European.
These bookends were purchased by the seller in 1975 from the contents of a well-appointed Fort Lauderdale home whose owner had previously lived in Quebec. They have been in the seller’s possession since 1975.
Condition is good vintage condition with age-appropriate wear. There are surface scratches, natural stone veining, patina/yellowing, small nicks/flea bites along the base edges, light soiling in carved details, and small abrasions/chips visible on the carved areas. No major structural break or repair is visible in the photos. Please review all photos carefully, as they are part of the description.
A beautiful and uncommon pair of carved stone figural bookends with strong Art Deco character.
