The official Kentucky Derby mint julep glass tradition began in 1938, making any glass from the 1940s part of the first decade of production. These early editions were made in much smaller quantities, often by Hazel‑Atlas or Libbey, and were sold only at Churchill Downs during the race.
The 1948 glass is the 11th official Derby glass ever produced, and it still features the early frosted finish and green silkscreen graphics used before the modern clear‑glass style became standard in the 1950s. Because so few survived in good condition, early‑series glasses (1938–1950) are considered the most collectible and historically significant in the entire Derby glass line.
Rare vintage 1948 Kentucky Derby Churchill Downs frosted glass, measuring approximately 5.25" tall. This early Derby souvenir glass features green graphics with a horse head inside a horseshoe on the front and running horse/jockey graphics around the sides.
This rare early‑series Derby glass was purchased at Churchill Downs in 1948 by my mother, who attended the 74th Running of the Kentucky Derby in person. It has remained in our family for 76 years, since the day it was purchased. It has reportedly never been used since original purchase and has been carefully kept as a treasured keepsake.
The glass is in pristine vintage condition with strong green graphics, a clean frosted finish, and no chips, cracks, or noted damage. Bottom has a raised molded mark that appears as a stylized letter or glass mold mark. A scarce early Kentucky Derby collectible and a beautiful addition for a Derby, Churchill Downs, horse racing, mint julep, or vintage barware collection.
