Antique 1896 Song Stories for the Kindergarten by Mildred J. Hill and Patty S. Hill, published by Clayton F. Summy Co., Chicago. This early children’s music book includes “Good-Morning to All,” the Hill sisters‘ song whose melody later became associated with “Happy Birthday to You.” Please note: this book does not contain the later “Happy Birthday to You” lyrics.
The book is also signed by the original owner on the inside page. The inscription appears to read “Annetta Wysong, 1802 East 12th Street” or similar. Please review the photo of the signature for exact spelling.
Family Provenance / History:
This book has been in my family for generations and belonged to the mother of my mother’s cousin. My mother’s cousin later became a longtime kindergarten teacher in Brooklyn, New York, where she taught for approximately 50 years. She passed away on January 1, 2000, at age 94. Family history connects this book to her teaching years, making it a meaningful antique kindergarten music piece with real classroom history.
Condition:
This book is being sold as-is in poor/fair antique condition. The spine is heavily worn/damaged, the binding is loose, and there are multiple loose/detached pages. Approximately 20 pages are missing. I have not identified each missing page individually. The cover has heavy age-related soiling, discoloration, edge wear, corner wear, and surface wear. Interior pages show toning, handling wear, edge wear, and age-related wear throughout.
The “Good-Morning to All” page is present. Please review all photos carefully, as they are part of the description.
Size: Approximately 11 x 9 inches
A worn but meaningfully loved antique kindergarten songbook with family provenance, original owner signature, and the historically important “Good-Morning to All” page present.
